Bovine lameness is one of the four major diseases leading to the culling of adult dairy cows(the others being masttis, reproductive disorders, and digestive diseases). Cows suffering from lameness experience reduced feed intake, which in turn significantly decreases milk production. It also causes mobility impairment, leading to anestrus and alfecting breeding eficiency. The increased treatment costs and cow mortality or culling resulting from lameness can cause substantiallosses to dairy farms.Measures to reduce the incidence of lameness on farms focus on prevention, such asimproving barn hygiene and conducting regular hoof care. Nutritionalpreventive measures include ensuring adequatedietary fiber concentration to reduce the incidence of ruminalacidosis. Numerous studies have shown that additional biotin supplementation can increase hoof hom strength and integrity, signifcantly reducing theincidence of lameness.
